An English Afternoon

It’s kind of a running joke in our house that I’m easily influenced by what I see. When we’re out shopping or watching something on TV, I’m always tempted by things that are cute or interesting or fun. I think it’s fair to say that I’m a marketing department’s dream customer!

First thing yesterday morning, I caught up on the latest episode of Downton Abbey. The show wasn’t even half way through when I suggested to Peter that we have a very ‘English’ sort of day. He laughed at me for being so impressionable but also didn’t shy away from the suggestion.

Within minutes, Peter was looking up places to explore and stumbled upon this article of the most romantic places to visit in Surrey. We’ve been to several on the list already, so that was a good sign. One of the suggested places, village of Shere, was completely new to us so decided that would be the perfect place to go.

Turns out Shere is right around the corner. We’ve actually driven past it on a main road dozens of times without knowing it was there. But we’re so glad we finally discovered it now. Shere is as quaint and sweet and English as it was cracked up to be!

We had lunch in the White Horse pub that was used in filming The Holiday with Cameron Diaz and Jude Law. After lunch, we poked around a few shops, peeked in at the church, and got ice cream at a small shop beside the stream. All in all, a very pleasant afternoon and such a great find.
